Automotive: the French decline is not cyclical. It is structural.

In fifteen years, France went from the industrial heart of Europe… to 5th place. Behind Germany, but now also Spain, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

The figures are well known. But what they reveal runs deeper:

a continuous decline in industrial weight (from ~11% to ~9% of European production)

fragmented, less competitive sites

a loss of attractiveness against more integrated, more agile ecosystems

Meanwhile, other countries made clear choices: specialization, productivity, volume concentration.

The issue is no longer the capacity to produce. It is the capacity to execute better, faster, and at greater scale.

What we observe in the field: the best-performing manufacturers do not win on labor costs alone. They win on their operating model.

Three key gaps explain the fall-off:

1. Industrial density

More concentrated sites, higher volumes, better absorption of fixed costs.

1. Operational excellence

Robust standards, daily steering, tight control of flows and production rates.

1. Execution speed

Fast decisions, short cycles, the ability to adapt the industrial base continuously.

In France, the challenge is clear: move from a logic of adjustment… to a logic of deep transformation.
